Volunteering...Make a Difference!

Barnsdale Road School’s volunteers have helped to make it a great school. Your kids love to have you volunteer, you meet new and old friends, and Barnsdale benefits from your donation of time. It’s a WIN / WIN situation!

There are a wide variety of groups, some socially focused, some educationally focused. Visit the individual opportunity listings below for descriptions of some of the ways you can help.

Volunteering can involve a commitment of once a week, once a month, or just plain once! Watch your weekly emails for volunteering opportunities. We would love to see you throughout the year, even if you can only volunteer for an hour! It will make a difference!!!

If you would like to know more about helping on any of the PTO committees, you can email any one of the PTO Board members.

Art Enrichment - Art Enrichment serves to supplement the art curriculum by exposing students to a variety of artists, artistic styles and media. Two to four parent volunteers are needed in every classroom. They will visit the classroom once per trimester to lead an art appreciation discussion and an age appropriate art project, such as Cave Painting and Portraits. Folders with information on the artists and project ideas are available as well as materials for planning the activities.   Art Enrichment is a fantastic way to share your artistic talent and use your creativity!

Assemblies - The Assemblies chairpersons plan all cultural assemblies for the year.  They are given a budget to work with and try to coordinate dates with trimester endings, or the days just before a break. One of the chairs, the PTO President or school Principal may introduce the assemblies, but other than that, they are self-sustained.

Calendar - The Calendar chairperson works with the PTO President and school Principal to collect dates throughout the year and produces the actual calendar.  Once type-setting and proofing are complete, the chairperson bids out the job to local printers and sets up delivery of the calendar to the school prior to registration so the calendars can be handed out at registration.

Directory - The directory chair collects teacher information and student data from registration and compiles it into a concise, easy to read “phone book” that lists each student by class, as well as alphabetically. Once the information has been compiled, cross referenced, type-set and proofed, the job is bid out to local printers for the actual printing of these books. The books are then distributed to all families early in the school year.

Hootenanny – This is an hour long party for students.  There is wacky dancing, Barnsdale Owl bandanas and a light snack.

PAC Representative - The PAC is an advisory board to the District 102 Superintendent and School Board made up of participants from each Dist 102 school. The task of the committee is to provide ongoing dialog with and feedback to the Superintendent and the School Board.

Room Parent - Parent volunteers are needed to plan and run 3 class parties.  Parties are held at Halloween, Christmas, and the End of The Year Party.  This is a great opportunity to have fun with your child and their classmates.

School pictures - are taken once a year, in the fall, with one retake day. Parent Volunteers are needed to help coordinate getting the students from their classrooms to the room where the photographer is set up. Timing requirements include a few hours on picture day and an hour or so on re-take days. Consider helping make our students look their best!

School Spirit - Parent volunteers are needed to help at various times throughout the year with Fundraising Activities and Barnsdale Road School Spirit clothing (i.e., T-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.) in the fall.

Staff Appreciation – We supply treats for teachers on Conference Day in the fall; at Christmas, we provide restaurant gift cards for the paras and lunch/maintenance staff; and during Teacher Appreciation week, we supply a daily treat plus on Friday we pick up lunch for the teaching and office staff.

Welcome Party - Volunteers are needed to help plan the event and to set up and run various games and activities, as well as distribute and sell snacks. The party runs from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30p.m. on a Friday in early September.  Shifts are broken up so that volunteers can still enjoy the party with their families.  Family Friendly!

Yearbook – One to two parent volunteers are needed in each classroom to take photographs of all events.  A volunteer is needed to do layout and production of the yearbook and several people are needed to help with the organization and distribution.
