Parents have many questions when sending their child to school for the first time. We hope we can help answer some of your questions here. Your anonymous questions and the answers to them will be posted on our FAQ page.
Arrival Procedures
Families who need to drop off older students at Forest Road School can drop their kindergartner off at our back doors at 8:15. Please reinforce that your child should wait near the building with you and that it is not time to play on the outdoor playground. Miss Anderson will stay at the door until 8:20 for families who are running late. Once she closes the door, we do not have anyone on duty to monitor the hallway until 8:30 since teachers are on duty in the classrooms. If you arrive after the door closes, please walk to the front of the building to wait with our other families.
Our bell rings at 8:30 for the official start of our day. All other families, or anyone running late, can wait with their child outside the main front doors on Barnsdale until the doors open at 8:30. The tardy bell rings at 8:35. All students should be in their classroom at this time. If a student arrives after 8:35, he/she will need to stop in the office for a tardy slip.
We are asking your support in respecting these procedures. Lately we have had students trickling in the entire time between 8:15-8:45. This creates an unsafe environment since we do not have staff available to be on duty the entire time. We want to ensure that students are not wandering the building, or worse, leaving the building. In addition, the constant ringing of the bell puts a stress on our office staff, Mrs. Witt. During this early time she is trying to keep up with absence reports and ensuring that substitutes are ready.
Parking and Traffic Flow
Parents can park in the last two rows (nearest Barnsdale Rd.) of the south parking lot when dropping off or picking up your child. If you find the south lot full, you can park on Garfield or south on Barnsdale.
Please be aware that:
--There is No Parking in the bus lane (reserved for buses)
--There is No Parking in the North Lot (reserved for Science Center and Township Treasurer)
--There is No Parking in Handicapped Parking Spaces (reserved for handicapped drivers)
--The Staff Parking Lot and the back driveway behind Barnsdale Road School are NOT to be used as drop off/pick up lines.
We need to be respectful of the purposes for which these spaces are intended. Police officers monitor the traffic flow of both Barnsdale and Forest Road vehicles.
We thank you for your cooperation.

Spilled milk, slopped paints, a book that is just too interesting to put down and go to the ... well, accidents happen. |

So the office keeps a supply of pants and shirts, but we can always use more. If you have a few old clothes to pass on that will help save the dignity and comfort of one of our little owls, please send them to the office. In particular, we need sweat pants in sizes 4 - 8. And if your kindergartener should come home in borrowed clothes, please launder them and return them for the next time. (Of course you keep the underwear.) Thanks! |

We would like to invite our families to help us celebrate our school spirit. We have a display case to showcase all kinds of owls. Stuffed animals, figurines, woodcarvings, pictures, etc. are all welcome. You can just send in or drop off your owl and we will put it in the display case. Towards the end of the year you can either come in to pick it up or donate it to the school. We encourage you to pop in and view the display at your convenience and encourage your little ones to look for their familyʼs owl as they head to art, music, or library. We love watching this display of our school spirit grow!
Dr. Shillingburg, District 102 Superintendent, has started a blog on the District website. The goal is to have this site be a place where there can be an open discussion on issues and any misconceptions can be cleared up . Parents can feel free to share their own positive thoughts or issues; once registered, parents can post original topics on this blog, which Dr. Shillingburg and others will then respond to. The goal is to help with communication and to be as open and transparent as possible.
