Have A Question about Barnsdale Road School or PTO?

Parents have many questions when sending their child to school for the first time. We hope we can help answer some of your questions here. Your anonymous questions and the answers to them will be posted on our FAQ page.

Parking Changes at Barnsdale / Forest Road Schools

On November 1st, due to the increased volume of traffic in the Barnsdale/Forest Road School parking lot, we will be closing the lot to all traffic except staff between 8:00-8:30 am and 3:00-3:30 pm.

We have made this decision for numerous reasons: people violating parking laws by parking in the fire lane, handicapped spots, and double parking; using the parking lot as a drop off/pick up zone which risks the safety of the students; and continuing to park in numbered spaces designated for staff resulting in no parking for our teachers.

We have tried repeatedly through our handbook and newsletters to collaborate with families. We are desperately trying to make sure all students remain safe. If the above mentioned violations continue to occur, we may have to result to towing unauthorized vehicles during the 8:00-8:30 time frame.

Parking for families during arrival and dismissal is still available on Garfield, north/south of the 900 block on Barnsdale, and north/south of the 900 block on Forest Road. The small lot on the north side of Barnsdale Road School is only for Science Center staff and Township Treasurer's Office.
Please help us ensure that everyone arrives at school safely each day by obeying these parking regulations.

Safety at Barnsdale

Arrival Procedures

Families who need to drop off older students at Forest Road School can drop their kindergartner off at our back doors at 8:15. Please reinforce that your child should wait near the building with you and that it is not time to play on the outdoor playground. Miss Anderson will stay at the door until 8:20 for families who are running late. Once she closes the door, we do not have anyone on duty to monitor the hallway until 8:30 since teachers are on duty in the classrooms. If you arrive after the door closes, please walk to the front of the building to wait with our other families.

Our bell rings at 8:30 for the official start of our day. All other families, or anyone running late, can wait with their child outside the main front doors on Barnsdale until the doors open at 8:30. The tardy bell rings at 8:35. All students should be in their classroom at this time. If a student arrives after 8:35, he/she will need to stop in the office for a tardy slip.

We are asking your support in respecting these procedures. Lately we have had students trickling in the entire time between 8:15-8:45. This creates an unsafe environment since we do not have staff available to be on duty the entire time. We want to ensure that students are not wandering the building, or worse, leaving the building. In addition, the constant ringing of the bell puts a stress on our office staff, Mrs. Witt. During this early time she is trying to keep up with absence reports and ensuring that substitutes are ready.

Parking and Traffic Flow

As of November 1, 2011, there is no parking in the Barnsdale / Forest Road parking lot from 8:00 - 8:30 am or 3:00 - 3:30 pm on school days.  At all other times, parents can park in the last two rows (nearest Barnsdale Rd.) of the south parking lot.  If you find the south lot full, you can park on Garfield or south on Barnsdale.

Please be aware that:

--There is No Parking in the bus lane (reserved for buses)
--There is No Parking in the North Lot (reserved for Science Center and Township Treasurer)
--There is No Parking in Handicapped Parking Spaces (reserved for handicapped drivers)
--The Staff Parking Lot and the back driveway behind Barnsdale Road School are NOT to be used as drop off/pick up lines.

We need to be respectful of the purposes for which these spaces are intended. Police officers monitor the traffic flow of both Barnsdale and Forest Road vehicles.

We thank you for your cooperation.

Everyone Has Accidents!

Spilled milk, slopped paints, a book that is just too interesting to put down and go to the ...
well, accidents happen.

So the office keeps a supply of pants and shirts, but we can always use more.  If you have a few old clothes to pass on that will help save the dignity and comfort of one of our little owls, please send them to the office.

In particular, we need sweat pants in sizes 4 - 8.

And if your kindergartener should come home in borrowed clothes, please launder them and return them for the next time.  (Of course you keep the underwear.)
